Pansy Flower - Pansies

The pansy flower is often called "the flower with a face" because of the darker shade in the middle.  It has one of the largest variety of colors of garden flowers, ranging from white, yellow, orange, apricot, pink, red, lavender, purple, blue, bronze, black, and mahogany.  The pansy can have just one color or a mix of two or more colors to form the "face" in the middle.  The yellow and blue pansies provide the strongest yet subtle fragrance.

Pansies make an ideal plant for high altitude gardens, as well as early and late season plantings at lower elevations where the plants blooms especially well in spring and fall.  Pansies do very well in cool weather and tolerate light frost and cold temperatures at night.  Basically, the pansy is a plant of all seasons.

Your pansy flowers will thrive in morning sun and well drained soil.  When planting, spread your plants approximately 6 to 8 inches apart.  A time-released fertilizer can be used at the time of planting to ensure healthy plants and long term blooming.  Once planted, make sure you water them thoroughly.  When pansies don't perform well it's usually because they're not getting enough water.  To help reduce weeds around your pansies and to keep the moisture in you can use mulch with organic matter.

Mass them in an area or an entire bed with for a striking spring effect. They also are great in windowsills and containers.
