Lily flowers - Lilies

Lilies are mostly found growing in fairly good soil in association with shrubs and other plants which shade their roots and help to keep the bulbs cool and in a uniform state as regards moisture.  Plant the bulbs fully 3 inches deep in most cases and surround them with an envelope of sand 1/2 inch thick.  They grow quicker if you put a few pieces of peat beneath the bulbs at the time of planting.  When growing, lilies require a fair amount of moisture;  however, to prevent the roots from rotting during the winter months, you should choose a well-drained area.  If you plant lilies before the end of September, you will give them time to naturally grow during the fall and they should flower well the next year. Lilies grown from seed take from two to six years to produce flowers.
